In meetings with state and federal legislators, it has become clear that many are vaguely familiar with the issue of stray voltage. However, the common expression is surprise that dairy farmers are still dealing with this issue. Some thought the "guides" that have developed by the utility industry had taken care of it. Others thought it was no longer an issue simply because they have not heard from constituents about it. We need to make our voices heard loud and clear..."This is a problem, and it needs to be corrected immediately!"
Call your state and federal representatives and tell them your story or tell them about your neighbor's story. The more they hear from farmers, the more they will understand the importance of this issue. Our industry has to be involved in the solution, because nobody knows our cows and farms better than us.
Get involved in your local agricultural organizations to pass resolutions that address this issue. When they have resolutions, their policy people can then lobby for change through the legislative process. Check out your Farm Bureau, Farmers Union, Milk Producers organizations, breed organizations and your co-ops that you sell milk to. They all have a presence in your state and national capital buildings and their job is to represent you. There are some amazing people working on our behalf, but it is our job to be involved to help guide what they fight for.
The efforts of this website have allowed doors to be opened, but some of those things have a cost. We are currently looking at ways to fundraise to cover the costs of travel to meet with legislators and educate producers and to continue to update this website. Please consider aiding in this effort with a financial contribution. We hope to have an option for giving available soon.
There is so much that needs to be done to dis-spell the myths surrounding stray voltage and educate the livestock and electrical industries. This takes time and resources. Please consider contributing to help STOP this scourge on our industry before another farm does under.
